Steer Clear With New Car Navigation Systems

As we make our way further and further into the new millennium, so the vision of a technology dominated world becomes brighter and closer. A recent trend has been the growth in manufacturers of vehicle navigation systems aimed at keeping trouble away from drivers – especially those who are least attentive and experienced.

Many of these new driver assistance systems are designed to help drivers avoid being involved in accidents. The system uses rear and side-mounted cameras that monitor the movement activity on the side and behind the vehicle and alert the driver of any potential danger by sending a visible and audible signal. They represent a rather logical step-up from stability controls and rear backup cameras that today come among the advanced features for higher tier cars.

Ford has offered what seems to be a rather valuable add-on to a driver assistance system like this. Some of their models come with a so-called Cross Traffic Alert that is designed to let the driver know about any approaching vehicles, whilst backing out from a parking space.

A similar invention from Nissan is currently included in their Infiniti EX crossover SUV and FX Sedan models: a lane departure driving system. This feature is directed at those inattentive drivers who tend to switch lanes, as and when they wish. Recognising that it may be a never-ending journey to get such a driver to change their ways, Nissan has changed the alert systems in their cars. The system carefully works together with vehicle stability system and selectively applies the brakes.

Finally, Lexus LS 600h L luxury sedan truly raises the bar for gently but effectively assisting the drivers. The model comes equipped with a pre-collision system, designed to determine when the driver is not keeping his or her attention on the road. If the driver is distracted, the system applies brakes and reprograms the steering to help the driver move away from the obstacle – including a pedestrian – with the maximum speed.
